Habits that Can Ruin your Teeth

Dentists say that poor nutrition can affect your entire immune system. This increases your susceptibility to a lot of infections and disorders. These include periodontal disease as well as other dental problems. The following habits can damage your teeth.

Not Flossing

dental flossingMost people know the importance of flossing teeth including those that brush religiously. Flossing daily is vital for taking care of your teeth. It is an important factor in preventing the periodontal disease that affects more than fifty percent of adults.

Flossing effectively removes debris and plaque which stick between the teeth and on the gums. It also gives you a more attractive smile since it polishes the surface of the teeth. Besides, it prevents bad breath.

Untimely Brushing

Dentists always teach us to brush after meals. However, that is no longer the beat time to brush. After taking high-acid drinks or food like citrus fruits, coffee and wine, ensure you rinse with water to neutralize the acid. Wait for an hour before you reach for the toothpaste to brush. Brushing immediately after taking carbonated drinks and acid food can lead to erosion of the tooth enamel.

Over-Enthusiastic Whitening

Bleach in the whitening agents is the culprit. The jury is out on whether the bleach erodes the tooth enamel. However, it is unanimous in that excessive whitening increases sensitivity of the teeth. Even home-whitening treatments need to be exercised in moderation. Some of the whitening toothpaste and gels contain abrasive substances which also increase sensitivity leading to pain. You also need to note that artificial whitening has its limits. As you age, whitening is not going to enhance your smile or make the teeth whiter.

Hot Drinks

People who often take hot beverages usually have unhealthy teeth. Coffee and black tea contain tannins that stain your teeth and lodge into the groove and crevices of your tooth enamel. Tannins stain the surface of the teeth and also attract decay-causing bacteria. It is wise to consume hot drinks in moderation and add milk to neutralize the acids. Drinking more water is also helpful.

Soft Drinks

These drinks thrive on sugar which is not good for the teeth. Excessive sugar increases the chances of decayed teeth, gum infections, and cavities. Dark colas can also stain your teeth thus undermining your otherwise beautiful smile. You need to rinse your mouth with water after taking soft drinks. Also, chew sugarless gum to counteract the acids and remember to wait for one hour before brushing.

Acidic foods can also ruin your teeth. Ensure you always rinse your teeth after taking any acidic food. These habits can damage your teeth so it is vital to avoid them as much as you can.
