Long Life Solutions has secured deals worth up to £5 million with some of the biggest names in US retail to supply revolutionary punnets that ensure fruit is transported by greener means.
Three major US firms - Costco, Walmart and Kroger - have placed orders with LLS. The deals will see these companies receive fruit from Oppenheim, one of the largest blueberry producers in the world. Oppenheim will wrap its products in LLS's revolutionary Smart punnets. These allow companies to stop transporting fruit by air, and encourage the use of seaborne transit routes. The fruit also remains fresh for longer when wrapped in Smart materials, meaning the consumer receives a more nutritious product.
Fruit wastage, which can be as high as 20% is reduced dramatically. Andrew Wright, the CEO of LLS, said: "This is a major breakthrough for a Scottish company. LLS is helping to give US consumers a better product at a fraction of the cost to the environment.
advertisement"As well as helping the growers and the retailers cut their transportation costs and reduce their carbon footprint, LLS will also be tackling the £24 billion food wastage problem."
The Smart punnet works by using a membrane that manages the flow of oxygen and CO2 to the product.
