Powell Engineering, Inc. manufactures roll lifting shaftless unwinds and rewinds for the paper, film, and non-woven converting industries. The unwinds are designed to increase production by providing speedy roll changes, they also increase worker safety. Our machinery is placed with new OEM product lines as well as with end user retrofits. Our proven machines are reliable moneymakers for our customer's. Check out our product line to see which model is best suited for your project.
Model EP Shaftless Unwind
The model EP (Eccentric Pivot™) shaftless unwind minimizes downtime between rolls to give you hours more production daily. The time tested proven moneymaker Model EP is used by converters worldwide for increased safety and production. The Model EP is available for rolls up to 10,000 lbs. and is used in both high and low speed applications. The machine is customized for each application through use of an array of options. The Model EP is available for roll sizes under and up to 60", 72", 84", 100" and 114" diameters. Roll widths range from 16" up to 160".
Model EP Junior Shaftless Unwind
The Powell Engineering, Inc. model EP Junior Eccentric Pivot™ roll-lifting shaftless unwind minimizes downtime between rolls to give more production. It can lift rolls up to 3,000 lbs. Its standard configuration includes a hydraulic lateral adjustment that can be used in conjunction with an edge guide. Options include a variety of core chucks, tensioning systems and custom configurations. A wide range of roll sizes can be accommodated.
Model XH Unwinds
The Model XH shaftless unwind is capable of running rolls weighing up to 20,000 pounds. The same options are available as are for the model EP. The customer runs this machine at high speed and tension so we need to dissipate a lot of heat.
Model DCP Dual Roll Shaftless Unwind
The model DCP dual roll shaftless unwind is perfect for multiple web applications. The unwinds are loaded from the ends or from a side loading roll cart. The unwinds can be placed under an overhead transfer structure which may contain, tension control and web steering devices. The DCP series is designed to have the same reliable nature as the proven models EP and EP Junior.
Surface-Driven Unwinds
The new surface-driven unwind boasts all of the proven features of the model EP Shaftless unwind. The stand is shaftless and roll-lifting and can be configured for small rolls or up to 10,000-lb. rolls. The shaftless roll-lifting design eliminates shaft-related back injuries and speeds roll changes significantly, allowing for higher daily production. The model GB surface-drive is integrated with the base stand to provide a complete and compact surface-driven solution.
Spindle-Driven Unwinds
A spindle drive can be implemented as an alternative to traditional braking or when the user needs to accelerate a roll faster than could be done by pulling on the web alone. A good example of this would be films that are highly extensible. Braking can be regenerative.
Mid-Process Rewinds
The same framework that is used for our unwinds can be used for a shaftless rewind. The flexibility of roll width, diameter and core size a shaftless unwind offers is available on the rewind end using this method. The bolt-on flange for core chucks can accommodate traditional shaftless core chucks or a special adapter that allows the use of a differential rewind shaft should the converter wish to rewind multiple cuts on separate cores. We call this offering mid-process since we see it being used at middle stages of manufacture. Product may have met one stage of progression but may need to be stored or moved to another area of a plant before it can go on to the final process. It is rewound at this "mid-process stage".
Motorized Aisle-Loading Option
This is a popular option when multiple stands are to be used in line or when spaces are too confined to allow ordinary roll loading. The photo shown is of a sheeter running simultaneous multiple webs. The option saves floor space by eliminating the need to leave room between stands for roll loading. A printing press which is designed with the mill-roll to be loaded and run under the press framework is another example. There is no room under the press for staging and loading the large diameter rolls converters would like to run. The roll is staged to the side of the press and the unwind travels out from under the press to accept the new roll.
Cast-Grip™ Core Chucks
Powell Engineering, Inc.’s new line of Cast Grip™ tapered core chucks is available in single core sizes from 3” to 12”. The chucks have a large surface area to support the core and radial fins to transmit torque. The Cast Grip™ chucks have been found to perform better than any tapered chuck we’ve encountered. Core damage is minimized and core holding problems generally disappear. Many of our customers like a tapered core chuck because a tapered nose lets them open up and run crushed cores. In response to this we have included a tapered area forward of the core holding area. The chucks bolt to our standard adapter.
Hand-Held Pendant Operation
The electric hand-held pendant allows for even faster, easier one-person roll changes.
