A new polyester film designed for high-speed packing offers increased tensile strength, its manufacturer claims.

Toray Plastics America claims its Lumirror FA5 matte polyester film is up to 50 per cent stronger than competiting products.

Films with increased tensile strength can be used on machines that package food at higher speeds, because they withstand pulling and cutting without tearing.

The low gas transmission rate of the film makes it particularly suitable for long-term food storage applications against competing products, which require anti-oxidants to be added to prevent product spoilage, claims the company.

One side of the film is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), while the other side uses nanotechnology to allow packagers to specify the exact level of gloss desired, while maintaining clarity, claims the company.

FA5 Film has an operating temperature range of -70C to 180C (-94F to F356), with a melting point of 260C (500F), and so is suitable for a range of packaging applications, claims Toray.

FA5 is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, as is especially suitable for products requiring heating in a conventional or microwave oven because of its heat resistance, its manufacturer claims.

The film withstands most solvents and chemicals, and is both water and moisture resistant, even when immersed, the company claims.

Tack sealable and easy to print on, FA5 can be used for various types of labels as well as a lamenting film, Toray claims.

The film has a matte polyester surface, primed for enhanced ink adhesion, claims the company. Water and solvent-based inks can be used as well as UV-curable colors.
