Real-time communications inside packaging machines is possible and happening in applications now, says The SERCOS organizations, represented at Pack Expo 2008, Nov. 9-13.

Rovema recently designed the Ethernet-based SERCOS III real-time communications system into its new control system for packaging machines (link explains the application, shows another photo). Rovema machines are said to handle sophisticated, complex packaging applications such as forming, filling, sealing, case packing, and retail packaging. Recently, Rovema decided to replace its prior ±10 Volt communication interface with an Ethernet-based bus system, thought to be more “future-proof.” SERCOS III is the Ethernet protocol in use.

The SERCOS N.A. (North America) annual member's meeting will be held at McCormick place on Thursday, Nov. 13.

SERCOS also be at SPS/IPC/Drives Show, Nov. 25-27, Nuremberg, Germany, with  an 80 square meter booth, with exhibition panels from a number of member companies plus multi-vendor SERCOS demos. A display will show many SERCOS III products now on the market.
