James W. Goff expanded the packaging program at Michigan State College upon joining the faculty in 1952.
Goff grew the program to include aesthetics and economics in packaging. He researched shock and vibration to increase the likelihood packages would arrive to their destinations fully intact.
Goff, 85, a former director and professor of the MSU School of Packaging, died Jan. 6 in Montrose, Colo.
Hugh Lockhart, one of Goff's former students and a professor in the School of Packaging, said Goff helped students further their education and inspired Lockhart to work as a faculty member.
"He instilled in the school and the students a spirit of adventure and inquiry," Lockhart said. "As a colleague, he was a leader and a mentor."
