Synopsis

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is, by far, the next wave in the evolution of computing. The concept is simple; place a transponder- a microchip with an antenna- on an item and then use a reader – a device with one or more antennas – to read data off of the microchip using radio waves. The reader passes the information to a computer, so that the data can be used to create business value. The ability to collect, analyze and share digital information at very little cost has been a bonus for businesses. RFID is a technology that can go inside products, and could be used to track consumers’ every purchase, creating business information about each customer, improving knowledge about the customers’ behavior and preferences.

The purpose of the document is to describe how RFID system works, how loyalty programs have developed over the years and to show how RFID can increase the efficiency of such programs with some examples.
