Food Packaging

For years, there was one choice for flexible packaging applications that required outstanding moisture, oxygen and/or aroma barrier properties. That choice was aluminum foil composites. However, foil composites present one major problem for many packaging applications – the inability to view the contents of the package prior to opening.

Fortunately, in the 1980s, new barrier technology emerged, providing clear film packaging options with good barrier properties. Rollprint realized the importance of this new technology and assumed a leadership role in the development and commercialization of these new clear barrier films. By 1988, Rollprint's clear barrier film technology leaped from good to superior with barrier properties approaching that of aluminum foil. As this surge in technology occurred, Rollprint's ClearFoil trademark was born. A new line of products were launched under the ClearFoil trade mark and the result is the most extensive array of ultra high barrier clear films in the industry.

Rollprint's ClearFoil product line continues to expand because it meets important industry needs for films which are sterilizable, transparent and appropriate for oxygen/moisture sensitive products. The ClearFoil line of flexible, ultra-high barrier, transparent laminations has grown to include dozens of products which meet a wide range of our customer's requirements for barrier. Today's ClearFoil products use numerous methods, including but not limited to SiOx and Al2O3, to achieve the barrier requirements of each individual customer in a variety of industries.

Transparent Ultra-High Barrier

Rollprint’s ClearFoil family of products offer high moisture vapor and oxygen barrier without the use of aluminum foil. The barrier-coated films can be laminated or extrusion coated for a weld or peelable seals to most any rigid or flexible packaging material. Several barrier levels are available to meet most performance/cost requirements.

Market Applications

ClearFoil structures are appropriate for applications where high barrier and product visibility are required. The table below provides guidance on ClearFoil ultra-high barrier material selection.

Clear Foil Structures

Clearfoil Overpouch

Rollprint offers a complete line of formable structures, from cold-formed foils and multi-ply semi-rigid laminates to thermoformable films.

At Rollprint, we especially enjoy working on programs that require formable webs. Because each application requires a different set of properties, formable webs typically present interesting challenges. Unlike the competition, Rollprint has the knowledge and capability to produce a formable structure that meets the requirements of your specific application.

Cold-Formed Foils

Since the mid-1980's, Rollprint has worked to develop the adhesive and processing technology that allows us to provide high performance formable foils to our customers.

Key characteristics include:

  • Superior Pin Hole Resistance
  • Deep Forming Capability
  • Fast Running Speeds
  • Sealants that Provide Smooth Peelable Seals
  • Superior Oxygen Barrier
  • Superior Moisture Barrier
  • Gamma/E-Beam Sterilizable
  • Chemical Resistance

Thermoformable Films

Rollprint has the knowledge and experience to help you design the ideal thermoformable web for your application, allowing you to maximize both economics and performance. The materials used in the design of our thermoformable films include coextrusions of EVOH, Nylon, Surlyn, PVDC and numerous types of polyethylene as well as economical polymer blends. Key characteristics include:

  • Exceptionally Even Draw
  • Superior Puncture Resistance
  • Sealable to a Wide Variety of Top Webs
  • Extremely Tough
  • High Clarity
  • Microbial Barrier

Multi-Ply Semi-Rigid Laminates

These sophisticated laminates are used to package and protect products that require the combination of several unique characteristics. Key characteristics include:

  • Chemical Resistance
  • Dimensional Stability
  • Aroma Barrier
  • Temperature Resistance
  • Resistance to Numerous Gases
  • Specific Moisture And Oxygen Barriers

A major trend in packaging is the increasing demand for easy opening packages. The consumer will no longer tolerate a package that requires the use of brute force to open. Rollprint has responded to this by pioneering peelable, easy opening packages. Rollprint understands that the use of easy opening packages will continue to rise rapidly, due to increasing levels of consumer demand.

Over the years, Rollprint has developed hundreds of peelable composites using both coatings and coextruded film technology. In 1998, Rollprint introduced a third technology to its arsenal of peelable films: extrusion coating. Rollprint’s state-of-the-art coextrusion coating/laminating equipment has allowed Rollprint to revolutionize the way peelable films are made. Through our Allegro and PropaPeel product lines, Rollprint can provide coextrusion-coated peelable sealants produced from polyethylene, polypropylene and polyester resins. These sealants offer a new approach for many package designs because of their unique combination of superior functional characteristics and economics.

The Rollprint team has the ability to design a peelable package for your packaging application. We will focus on your specific needs such as peel strength and the peel aesthetics that you require. Rollprint has the peelable solution for virtually any application.

Allegro Peelable Sealants

Rollprint’s Allegro peelable sealants are a proprietary family of coextruded sealants for use in a wide variety of applications. Allegro peelable sealants are based on either
polyethylene or polyester chemistries and are suited for sealing to and peeling from nearly any flexible or rigid packaging material. For applications requiring high barrier properties, Allegro peelable sealants can be applied to aluminum foil or Rollprint’s ClearFoil transparent high barrier films.

Market Applications

Allegro peelable sealants can be used for a wide range of applications including peelable pouches and lidding for a wide variety of food, medical and industrial end-uses. The table below provides guidance on Allegro peelable sealant selection.

Propapeel Peelable Sealants

Rollprint’s PropaPeel sealants are designed to be peelable from polypropylene. Used primarily as lidstock, these materials are also ideal for pouch applications. The PropaPeel sealants can be applied to a variety of stable materials including oriented polyester and nylon. Applications requiring high barrier may include the use of aluminum foil or one of Rollprint’s ClearFoil transparent high-barrier films.

Market Applications

PropaPeel structures are an excellent choice for applications requiring controlled, peelable seals to polypropylene cups and trays including retort/autoclaveable (shelfstable)packaging and disposable contact lens lidding
