Cylinders and Linear Thrusters for Custom Applications

Non-standard miniature cube cylinder ideally suited for semiconductor industry applications

Miniature Cube Cylinder

CFS-01011-A is a double acting, miniature `cube` cylinder (1/2` x 1/2` x 1/2`) ideal for applications requiring low output force in extremely tight spaces. This cylinder has been successfully applied in various semiconductor industry applications. Several are mounted side-by-side in a test fixture for circuit board continuity testing. Another application involves silicon wafer processing, in which the cylinders are used to clamp wafers during certain operations.

Blow Mold Cylinder

The piston rod is designed to perform a valve function within this double acting cylinder developed specifically for blow molding applications. The Blow Mold cylinder incorporates a separate port in the front assembly of the unit and the action of the piston rod opens or closes this flow of separate media through the front hollow portion of the piston rod. The piston seals ride inside the 304 stainless steel body using traditional lubrication and filters air in the same fashion as the traditional Bimba Original Line cylinder. This fully repairable Blow Mold air cylinder also features a non-rotating piston rod, which permits accurate positioning of the piston rod without any external guiding arrangement.

9/16` Bore Cylinders with Air Cushions

D-74322-A and D-65264-A are Original Line air cushioned style cylinders, 9/16` bore. Ideal for miniature high velocity application where the cylinder stroke bottoms out on each endcap or where noise is not acceptable, these cylinder designs offer the smallest bore size air cushioned design available. Each end cap is equipped with a fixed air cushion orifice, .013` in diameter restricting the exhaust for the last 0.4` of stroke, effectively reducing the kinetic energy of the end-of-stroke impact. Available in either nose mount (D-65264-A) or universal mount (D- 74322-A). Each style is dimensionally equivalent to its closest standard Original Line cylinder.

Low Breakaway Double Wall Cylinders

Bimba now offers its large bore Double-Wall ® cylinders in a low breakaway design. CDW-01613-A is a 3-1/4` bore cylinder, CDW-01621-A is a 4` bore cylinder and both are NFPA interchangeable. Each cylinder has been designed with a special piston seal with light squeeze and Bimba proprietary HT-99 lubrication. This design is ideal in applications where both extremely low breakaway combined with ultra smooth actuation are mandatory. These cylinders have been successfully applied in rigorous air balancing applications and have consistently outperformed other roundline competitive low friction designs. Each design comes in the #2 NFPA rod end style. Various NFPA mounting kits are available, offering a wide variety of mounting options.

TRD Air/Oil Cylinder Solves a Machine Builder`s Lifting Problems

A machine builder was searching for a way to lock two cylinders together as they lifted a 14` machine frame. Key to this request was that the cylinders also operate in unison. The answer to this engineering challenge turned out to be Bimba`s TRD Air/Oil tandem cylinders. The cylinders were designed with a criss-crossing oil flow to allow the cylinders to move as one unit. Special tubing and piston seals were also used to eliminate leakage.

Pizza Manufacturer Reduces Operating Costs with FO2 cylinders

A mass production pizza manufacturer was looking for a cylinder with enough force to flatten 16` (406.1mm) crusts while only using 25psi (1.7bar) of air pressure. The answer turned out to be Bimba`s multiple power, stainless steel body FO2 cylinder. Not only did the cylinder provide two times the force of a single cylinder to effectively flatten these larger crusts, it also drastically cut air consumption along with minimizing setup time.

TE Series Linear Thrusters Provide Improved Performance in Food Packaging Application

This manufacturer of food packaging equipment uses Bimba`s Linear Thrusters on a machine that fills large plastic bags with fresh or frozen vegetables for restaurant, institution, and other commercial uses. After filling, the Linear Thrusters simultaneously `pat` the bag, causing the vegetables to settle prior to sealing. Initially, the company used Bimba`s T Series Linear Thrusters with standard metal bearings. A change was made to the TE Series Linear Thruster with composite bearings as it offered a number of benefits for this application. The machine is subjected to high-pressure caustic washdowns, and the stainless steel shafts and tooling plate used in the TE Series provides superior corrosion resistance. The composite bearings offer several advantages. First, the single-piece bearings have full 360° contact with the shafts, which prevents food debris from being driven into the bearing during washdowns. Second, there is no need for lubrication, which can hold food particles onto components even after washdowns. That means the possibility for contamination is reduced. In addition, with the very short, quick strokes needed to pat the bags, the composite bearings wear more evenly, extending the life of the Linear Thrusters.

PC Cylinder Solves Application Problem for Food Processor

Bimba`s PC Cylinder features a stainless steel body with thermoplastic end caps. The end caps offer excellent resistance to moisture, lubricants, solvents, oil, weak acids and bases. A meat processing equipment manufacturer uses the PC Cylinder as part of a meat-skinning machine to remove the top layer of skin from hams, poultry and other meat products. The PC Cylinder withstands the hard caustics used in the daily cleaning process. The manufacturer has found that the cylinder lasts longer and now uses them on other equipment.
