Iselin, NJ, Engelhard announced today that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted Engelhard's Generally Regarded as Safe (GRAS) Notice for the generation of chlorine dioxide with Engelhard Aseptrol chlorine dioxide release agent using controlled sustained release (CSR) technology. The GRAS notice covers the use of chlorine dioxide generated by Engelhard Aseptrol’s CSR technology when used in packaging materials for fresh fruits and vegetables. Aseptrol with CSR technology can significantly extend the shelf life of the produce contained within the package.
“Aseptrol’s powerful antimicrobial and deodorization properties enable a wide variety of economically beneficial applications within the food industry,” said Michael Cochran, Engelhard’s global sales and marketing manager for Aseptrol. “The designation of GRAS is further recognition for the technology’s safety, and gives Aseptrol opportunities in a number of new unserved markets.”
Engelhard Aseptrol releases chlorine dioxide (CIO2) at precise rates and in controlled concentrations when it comes into contact with water or moisture in the air -- enabling cost effective and portable ClO2 delivery. It is available in powder, tablet and sachet form.
Aseptrol is currently being used in a wide variety of consumer applications. It can be applied onto labels, tissue paper, clam shell packages and other containers that are commonly used to wrap and ship food products such as fruits and vegetables. Aseptrol protects and preserves such perishables from microbial contaminants that otherwise could destroy them before delivery to stores and consumers.
Engelhard holds multiple registrations from the EPA, and continues an active research program to develop other high-value applications for this novel technology.
