Synopsis

Because of the globalisation of markets more and more products are produced far away from the consumers today. Hence for international trade, an efficient packaging technology is more important than ever. Packaging protects goods and is essential for safe distribution and warehousing. However, packaging is usually required to provide additional functions, so that packaging design today can be considerably more sophisticated than it was just a few years ago. We can expect further packaging developments in the future. One important trend that influences the design of packaging is due to demographic changes such as the increase of single-person households and the aging of society. Other influences include the increasing automation of production processes and thus the increase of production speed, desire for more security, especially the protection of children and old people, and last but not least, the desire for more convenience. Another important factor that has substantially changed the look of packaging in recent years is the trend towards self-service, i.e. the goods have to sell themselves by their packaging today. All these trends have led to a clear change of packaging in recent years, especially in the direction of high-quality and technically demanding structures. To make such packaging, all raw materials and additives that are needed for the production of packaging are also subject to steady further development. This includes adhesives, which are indispensable to the production of most packaging. Hence it is not surprising that in recent decades the development of packaging adhesives has been intensively pursued, so that today there are tailor-made packaging adhesives for all kinds of applications, which contribute to producing high-quality packaging that meets all demands.
