At the centre of Elopak's well established range of packaging solutions is the Pure-Pak carton, the world's first paperboard carton. Today Elopak's packaging pedigree has been enhanced to include a range of plastic solutions as well.

Based in Norway, and wholly owned by the Ferd Group (one of Norway's largest privately owned industrial groups) Elopak is continually modifying its packaging expertise to match changing world demands for packaged food. Elopak's business is to break new ground at every level of packaging; processing standards, food science, logistics analysis, packaging concepts, all alongside a total systems approach which uniquely characterizes Elopak's contribution to the world of packaging.

Half a century of continuous development sees a truly global corporation operating on every continent. With in depth penetration through a network of market units and associates in more than 40 countries and customers in over 100, the Elopak Group seeks to bring its international expertise and product technology to new markets.

PACKAGING SOLUTIONS FOR CARTON AND PLASTIC BASED PACKAGING SYSTEMS

Elopak's Mission

To satisfy market needs for attractive high quality carton and plastic based packaging systems for non-carbonated fresh and long-life liquid food products. This will be achieved by continuous focus on consumer and customer satisfaction, innovation, operational efficiency and human capital development.

Elopak Company Strategy for Aseptic Liquid Food Packaging

Elopak will focus on and be the leading international player in the fresh and premium aseptic liquid food packaging market.

This will be achieved by:

  • Continuous launch of product/systems developments and innovation
  • Continuous improvement of operational efficiency
  • Geographic expansion
  • Establish a strong system portfolio in the growing long-life liquid food packaging segment to support long-term growth

ELOPAK'S ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Elopak is committed to the principles of sustainable development and will conduct its business with due respect for responsible resource management and protection of the environment.

Elopak's Environmental Objectives

We direct our efforts to:

  • Be respected for our environmental responsibility
  • Reduce the environmental impact of our products and services
  • Influence the environmental impact in the total value chain

PRODUCTION OF USER-FRIENDLY PACKAGING

Elopak has been providing consumers with convenient, user-friendly packaging since 1957. We are packaging food, one of the world's most precious resources that must be well protected. It should reach consumers in high quality and low price.

Loosing food through bad packaging wastes far more resources than packaging itself. Put another way, efficient, modern packaging reduces the impact on our environment.

Continuously evolving, continuously responding to demand

Thanks to systematic development and improvement programmes Elopak today uses less material and less energy in its packaging systems, and is still able provide a greater choice of packs than ever before.

In close co-operation with producers and manufacturers in the whole supply chain we are working to continuously improve the design, resource use and efficiency of packaging.

The liquid carton board is 16% lighter than it was a decade ago, the aluminium foil layer for aseptic cartons is 30% thinner than 30 years ago and the stiffness of the board is 20% greater.

All Elopak's packaging can be disposed of safely in modern controlled waste management systems

Delivering the goods in prime condition

Consumers in the developed world purchase food and drinks where and when they want them. Because of packaging, these foods remain in prime condition from purchase date to use-by date. In less developed countries, up to half of all food is ruined before it gets to the consumer. In USA and Western Europe this figure is less than 3%.

Delivering the goods at the right price

Good packaging means lower prices for foods, because it reduces the cost of transport, distribution, storage and retailing and reduces the costs associated with food wastage.

Recycling Used Packaging

Used packaging can be recycled after having served its main purpose: protecting the food, and saving it from going to waste.

Fibre packaging, the beverage cartons, can be collected with other lightweight packaging material and sorted, - and the cellulose is recovered in a process called re-pulping. This involves nothing more complicated than hot water and simple process equipment. The recycled fibres are re-used in a variety of new paper products like office stationary, egg boxes, paper towels. When the cellulose fibres have been recycled a few times, the fibres become very short and are then used in corrugated packaging material.

Plastic materials can either be reused as raw material in the same type of plastic, or recycled into new plastic materials in a process called feedstock recycling.

Energy recycling of both the cellulose fibres and plastic materials saves new energy sources.

PACKAGING MATERIALS – Fibre Packaging and Plastic Packaging

Fibre packaging

Packaging made from cellulose fibres takes their raw material from the forest. The trees are all harvested in the northern coniferous belt, which means Canada, USA, Northern Europe and Russia. Most of the trees go to saw mills, only what cannot be used for saw timber, i.e. for house building and furniture making - is taken to specialised production facilities to be made into paper.

Plastic packaging

Plastic packaging takes their raw material from natural resources such as oil and natural gas. Plastics accounts for less than 5% of the global oil consumption, and packaging less than that. As the products can be recovered, either in an energy incineration facility or through material recycling, the resources are re-used with a high degree of efficiency.

CARTON SYSTEMS CONCEPT – Chilled and Ambient Systems

Chilled Systems Packaging Solution

We seek to respect the natural taste of the products and the nutritional value of the food. Elopak’s standard fresh and clean concept provides cost effective packaging for dairy products requiring shelf life up to 10 days.

Elopak's chilled systems include a wide range of filling methods and product applications based on paperboard packaging. Elopak's expertise covers all the essential components of a total systems packaging solutions, so that as well as providing filling machines and packaging, Elopak can assist with supplying or coordinating equipment for product processing, product handling and product distribution.

Elopak combines as many of these components as the customer needs to create a tailor-made packaging solution.

Elopak chilled filling technologies

  • Hygienic: for chilled products
  • Clean: for improved protection by using clean air (HEPA Filter)
  • Ultra clean: For improved protection and extended shelf life by using clean air (HEPA Filter) plus carton disinfection.

Ambient Systems Packaging Solution

The hot fill concept is ideal for those processors requiring a long life performance with the minimum investment. Hot fill is an inexpensive conventional filling technology that gives a robust, long life performance to products such as fruit juices. The typical shelf life is 6-12 months.

The Elopak Ambient Systems include a wide range of filling methods and product applications for fiber-based packaging material. Elopak's expertise covers not only filling machines and packaging, but the total system. Elopak can supply, handle and coordinate downstream materials handling equipment and distribution systems, as well as product processing and handling equipment.

Pure-Pak® Long-Life filling technologies

  • Hot-Fill (hot-filling followed by a cooling tunnel)
  • Aseptic (cold or ambient filling of the product without additional cooling required)

CARTON SYSTEMS PRODUCTS

The Pure-Pak Carton

The Pure-Pak® carton is the primary packaging in the total Elopak portfolio and its classic design is essentially the same as in the patent of 1915. The appearance of the carton communicates a high quality product. The design of the Pure-Pak® carton ensures safe handling through the distribution chain, maximizes the shelf impact and protects the contents until consumption. To achieve this Elopak offers many board types, pack sizes, configurations and print qualities to meet the marketing demands of its environment.

THE BOARD TECHNOLOGY

The main board structures used in Pure-Pak® cartons are divided into four different types, as described below.

PE board
This is used for fresh products with short shelf life in chilled distribution. PE (Polyethylene) is the sealing layer providing protection from moisture and bacteria. Paperboard provides stiffness, strength and light protection

Alu board
This is used for aseptic and hot filled products with long shelf life in ambient distribution and fresh juices in chilled distribution. Aluminium provides the best oxygen barrier and light protection.

EVOH board
This is a none foil barrier alternative the Alu board. It can be used for extended shelf life and long shelf life in ambient and chilled distribution. EVOH-barrier represents a none foil alternative as an oxygen barrier where the light barrier of aluminium foil is not required.

In all cases board weight (gram\m²) will vary depending on the size of pack selected.

CARTON SHAPES AND SIZES

The mini Diamond Pure-Pak carton is perfect for drinking thicker and richer liquids directly from the pack. This packages presents more possibilities for dairy, juice and new age beverages. It comes in the sizes 250ml, 330ml and 500ml.

The shape of the Pure-Pak Curve carton provides new graphic possibilities and a prominent space for product names, slogans or other messages. This new carton stands out confidently on the shelf. It comes in the sizes 500ml, 750ml and 1000ml

SCREW CAPS AND CLOSURES

As long-life products require the highest protection level possible, Elopak has at an early stage decided to implement a post applied screw cap solution, leaving the carton intact for highest safety and yet still meet the requirements set by our customers.

The innovative screw caps that have been developed by Elopak also allow for differentiation between price and functionality, so catering for the main market, product segments, and different requirements

The Pak-Lok® Concept - adding consumer convenience to cartons Elopak’s closure programme is called the Pak-Lok concept. Our closures are available in a range of screw cap sizes, pouring performances, opening styles, processing compatibility and colours.

Elo-Lok applicators
The Elo-Lok closure is applied in the filling machine by an Elo-Lok applicator. Cartons manufactured for this screw cap are equipped with a full cut hole ready to receive the cap

Pure-Lok applicators
The Pure-Lok closure is sealed in position by either hot air or hot melt glue over a pre-cut disc. The barrier properties of the cartons are fully maintained till the consumer opens the closure by breaking the board seal.

Filling Machines for Cartons

Cross Section Filling Machine

There are two basic printing methods available within Elopak: flexographic and lithographic.

STANDARD FLEXO PRINTING METHOD

Standard flexography is a highly efficient printing method, but there are certain limitations which must be taken into account during the initial design process in order to obtain the best results from this medium. Standard flexo is used mostly for designs containing large solid areas, bold, sans-serif type faces and course screen rulings (20 l/cm)

SUPER FLEXO PRINTING METHOD

Through continuous investment in new generation, high quality nine-and-10-colour printing machines which feature automatic colour to colour registration; gearless drive systems; thin printing plates and sleeves for accurate plate mounting, our flexo print quality has improved significantly. Elopak introduced this flexo improvement as super flexo in 1995. The maximum screen ruling for super flexo is 34 l/cm which is sufficient for many design types.

OFFSET LITHO PRINTING METHOD

For over 12 years, Elopak has been using offset printing for the highest print quality demands. Offset permits reproduction and printing of finer screen rulings and photographic images.
Our sophisticated offset machines are equipped with UV (ultra violet) lamps between all printing units for fast ink curing which enables high-quality, high-speed printing on PE coated board.

UV CURABLE PRINTING INKS

UV-curing (drying) is a process which occurs when the inks are exposed to intense UV-light. Technically, UV curable inks offer many environmental and quality advantages, for instance increased abrasion and chemical resistance properties; they are non-flammable, non toxic and contain no solvents.

UV-FLEXO PRINTING

Solvent reduction (VOC's) and improved print quality continue to be key driving factors for the ongoing introduction of UV-flexo into our world-wide operations.

UV-inks do not dry until they are cured (exposed to UV light). They can be left on press overnight for example with no change to colour or performance. As a 100% solid system, UV-inks offer greater consistency in colour and viscosity and also sharper dot structure when compared to solvent based flexo inks.

UV-flexo inks are very similar to UV-offset inks although they are thinner (lower viscosity) and involve no water emulsification as is required with offset. Due to several small differences and a slightly thicker ink film, UV-flexo inks appear much glossier compared to UV-offset printing.

ELOPAK TECHNOLOGY CENTER

At the Elopak Technology Centre various properties are tested, such as filling performance, shelf life and off-taste during storage.

We have to ensure that the filling machine and packaging material protect the product for possible hazards and contamination. Packaging protects the product from the environment, and the level of protection is dependant on the barrier and mechanical properties of the packaging material.

The loss of vitamins and aromas, colour changes are parameters that need to be analysed very carefully. We must also satisfy the customer expectations of product quality during storage. An internal sensory panel of qualified assessors is used to verify an excellent sensory quality of food products filled in our package.

UNIFILL

A plastic portion packaging system for food and non-food products based on an innovative form-fill-seal machine concept.

Introduction to Unifill Plastic Packaging System

The Unifill System is an attractive, user-friendly system for plastic packaging of liquids and semi-liquids which complements the well established Pure-Pak®.

It is a thermoform, fill and seal process for plastic containers with numerous applications for food and non-foods.

Using a vertical thermoforming technique, two thin films of plastic sheet are pre-heated and formed into strips of monodose portion packs. The strips are then filled with liquid or semi-liquid product, the top is sealed and the strips are cut into individual shaped packages or sales units of 5 to 15 doses, depending on volume and shape - a truly innovative method of plastic packaging.

PLASTIC SYSTEMS PRODUCTS

UNIFILL PLASTIC PORTION PACK

Unifill in Brief

There are few portion packaging formats available that match the sheer versatility of a Unifill package.
