The packaging that accompanies the Marks & Spencer Swiss Chocolate Assortment is biodegradable, compostable and made from renewable resources. The insert holding the chocolates is made from a plant-based home compostable plastic material called Plantic.

DuPont honored the product along with six others in its 20th annual Awards for Packaging Innovation, which this year paid tribute to materials, processing, technology achievements in sustainability.

"These achievements demonstrate real progress in the journey toward sustainable packaging," said William F. Weber, DuPont's vice president of packaging. "DuPont added a special emphasis on sustainability in the 20th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation in order to raise the visibility of initiatives for enhanced performance, resource and energy efficiency, responsible sourcing, effective recovery and other innovation factors leading to sustainable packaging."

Kraft Salad Dressing got a nod for a new bottle that weighs nearly 19 percent less than its predecessor, which increases shipping efficiency by nearly 20 percent. A new flexible pack used by Jordan's Organic Cereals is compostable, biodegradable and made from renewable materials.

The EarthCycle Natureflex organic kiwi package scored points for its composition -- the compostable tray is made from renewable palm fiber which would otherwise be a waste product.

Other winners include the AMPET single serve danish seafood packaging, which keeps food fresh and reduces waste; the Water Bag-in-Box is cheaper and less energy intensive that conventional rigid bottle systems; and the AirLEssMotion Bag-in-Bottle System that uses a one step process to trim manufacturing-related energy intensity by more than 50 percent.

The contest also included three notable accomplishments, such as the PlantLove lipstick, which utilizes a single material for the applicator for easier recycling; the UniPak Eco, the first polypropylene container comprised completely of post-consumer recycled material; and the DuPont Cyrel FAST Thermal Process that eliminates solvents use in packaging graphics.
