The European Alliance for SMC/BMC ( www.smcbmcalliance.com) is an industrial association of leading European companies and scientific institutions involved in the product chain of SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) and BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound). Those are fibre-reinforced thermosetting compounds, which, in general, are composed of resin and reinforcing fibreglass. Other additives enhance performance, cure and processing.
Various manufacturing sectors use SMC-BMC, like transportation, construction, electronics, sanitary engineering, household appliances, industrial products or consumer products. End products vary widely from automobile parts to boat hulls, satellite dishes, computer casings, train carriage interiors or electrical insulation.
The Alliance promotes the benefits of the material, its performance and technology: when compared to other materials such as metal, aluminum and thermoplastics, SMC-BMC offers four major advantages: design freedom, environmentally friendly properties, sustainability, consistency through strength and stiffness.
Multifunctional usability, flexibility and versatility create a great opportunity for innovation. The current market demands more innovative design solutions, in addition to customers’ requirements for strength, durability and safety. SMC-BMC helps creating safer and stronger products without design limits: products, which weigh less than when using competitor materials. Subsequently, CO2 and other emissions are considerably reduced through reduced consumption of fuel and other energy sources. End products require less energy and fuel for movement and transport. Compared to thermoplastics, toxicity of smoke from burning is significantly lower. SMC-BMC products are rated highly on dimensional stability, temperature resistance, durability, corrosion resistance, weather resistance and electrical insulation. Unlike other materials, their strength and stiffness are unfaltering.
To increase the technical competence, the Alliance organises technical working groups, workshops, seminars and road shows. Elaborating technical studies, concepts and solutions for technical items are also part of the work, as well as the involvement in procedures and regulations causing effects on the SMC/BMC industry. The Alliance can provide you with the right information, help to find the right partners, suppliers or manufacturers, or simply assist you in making the right choices about using SMC-BMC materials.
The European Alliance for SMC/BMC was established in 1993 and has been growing and gained in importance through the years and now has members from all major European countries. Today, the Alliance is a member of (EuCIA), a non-profit organisation which represents the composites industry, and more than 100,000 people working in the industry, in Europe.
