There is a lot of buzz today in the pharmaceutical industry related to the use of radio frequency identification or RFID. But much of this buzz focuses on the technology itself and not what this technology can enable or how to use it to bring real value to the organization. Mandates from Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense (DOD), as well as strong recommendations from the Food and Drug administration (FDA), are driving many RFID initiatives. In addition, many of these projects are developed as “slap and ship” efforts, where the focus is only about placing RFID tag with basic product information on the package for shipping to a customer requiring this technology. This paper will discuss the benefits, value, and methods of securing the pharmaceutical supply chain by implementing an item-level serialized product tracking solution that is integrated with a manufacturer’s core packaging and supply chain operations.
