Smart packaging is the new wave sweeping over the packaging industry. In the coming years, smart packaging will be driven increasingly by the consumers need for information in regard to ingredients, storage, components, and disposal.

The vision of the future in packaging, according to experts, is one in which the package will increasingly operate as a system incorporating both smart and conventional materials.

However, for smart materials to be adopted in packaging, they need to be safe for food contact, and inexpensive relative to the value of the product.
