Testing a New Biodegradable Packaging Film
A Systech 8001 oxygen permeation analyser is being used to test Xylophane, a novel, biodegradable packaging film being developed in Sweden. The new film is made of by-products of corn, straw, and wood processing that are usually discarded.

Ampac has acquired privately-held, Mohawk Northern Plastics, for an undisclosed amount. Mohawk is a fully-integrated flexible packaging manufacturer providing products to the food, beverage, home and garden, and industrial markets.

Uganda's Largest Packaging Firm to Open in September
Riley Industries is set to open a $13 million plant in September, making it the biggest in the region. Situated in Mukono district, the company has a built up area of 150,000 square feet and is the widest single span factory in East Africa.

Consumer Packaging d’International Paper First Quarter Results
International Paper's operating profits were $61 million in the first quarter, up from $27 million in the 2006 fourth quarter, due to higher earnings in U.S. and European coated paperboard and foodservice businesses.

The packaging industry witnessed exciting developments this week, with announcements of several new products being unveiled.

A new environmentally friendly oxygen barrier film is being developed by Xylophane AB in Sweden, while Eagle Flexible Packaging has announced the addition of shrink sleeve labels to its extensive flexible film packaging capabilities.

The packaging industry seems to be growing with Riley Industries' plans to set up the widest single span packaging factory in East Africa, as well as Ampac's acquisition of Mohawk Northern Plastics, a specialist in flexible packaging products. Norprint has launched a new range of label products and services for environmentally conscious packaging operations.
