Anti-smoking group Quit wants the Federal Government to keep graphic warning labels on cigarette packets and ban other labelling.

Quit executive directive Fiona Sharkie says the tobacco industry uses packaging as a tactic to attract young people to smoking.

She says cigarette packets should be plain, carrying only a brand name in a standard text and a health warning.

"There's no question that the graphic health warnings have been enormously successful in portraying the deadly effect that cigarette smoking has and we would like to see the health warnings maintained on cigarette packs, but the removal of all colour, logo, emblems and embellishments on any packs," she said.

"This is a clear tactic for tobacco industry to recruit young people into smoking and when you consider that one out of every two long-term smokers will die of a smoking-caused illness, then they do have to recruit new people."
