Standard Testing Services
MOCON provides aroma/flavor/odor analytical service and multidimensional GC/MS service for the food, beverage, petroleum, chemical, polymer, consumer products industries. Our unique instrumentation is the backbone of our ability to provide timely analytical results in the areas of our expertise. MOCON`s Standard Testing Laboratory provides analyses of gas and moisture permeation for flat film and finished package applications.
Film Testing Services
O2 Transmission Rate Testing (O2TR) IAW ASTM D-3985, F-1927, or F-1307 H2O Vapor Transmission Rate Testing (WVTR) IAW ASTM F-1249
- Testing of samples will be performed in duplicate to ensure data reproducibility. Two separate samples of identical material will be tested and both results reported.
- Testing will be performed for a maximum of 150 hours for the quoted price. If the sample analysis exceeds 150 hours, MOCON will contact the client to determine if additional testing is required. Additional costs may be incurred for extended analysis time.
- Testing service prices can only be firmly quoted after receipt of the samples. Prices may vary due to special requirements.
- All samples will be disposed of upon completion of testing. If samples are to be returned it must be requested prior to the start of testing.
- For additional MOCON testing services-such as nitrogen, helium, argon, or other gases and/or compounds-please contact us.

Consulting & Package Development
MOCON has spent decades of developing permeation instruments. We are now using our thorough understanding of permeation and materials to help our clients develop packages that will keep their products safe.
Every day there are advances in barrier materials. These advances that lower permeation rates and extend the shelf life of our client`s products. We utilize both our internal and partner labs to provide a total analysis of our client`s package. Our Total Package Analysis includes:
Off Odor Analysis
Microanalytics, a MOCON company, is capable of isolating the slightest trace of off-odors as well as desirable flavors.
Permeation Analysis
Utilizing our in-house permeation lab, we provide permeation rates for gases that will be harmful to our customer`s product. This is the first step in determining a predicted shelf life for our customer`s products.
Microbiological Activity
If our client`s mode of degradation for its product involves microbiological analysis, we utilize our partner labs to provide quick, precise microbiological analysis.
Taste Panels
Permeation analysis, tied together with microbiological activity, is a good predictor of shelf life for our client`s products. We can take it a step further by conducting a taste panel in parallel with the analytical analysis which provides out clients real life feedback that correlates well with laboratory data.
Distribution Studies
We offer one-stop package evaluation for our customers. After all of the above analysis is done, our internal consultants will continue to manage your packing project by coordinating the distribution studies.
Other Analysis
MOCON provides customized proposals for our clients. We conduct several other analyses that are dictated by the types of products our clients are packaging. Shorten Time to Market: By outsourcing the package evaluation process to MOCON, our clients have gone to market sooner with their products. Aroma & Off-Odor Analysis
MOCON has served a number of industries over the past 10 years with expert analytical services related to aroma and off-odor. We have a full analytical services lab and have over a 90% success ratio in helping resolve aroma and malodor issues in a wide range of materials.
Because trace level compounds are often responsible for off-odors, aroma profiling is a particularly effective method for the resolution of these types of problems. The comparison of the odor profiles of good and bad odor samples will reveal which compounds are causing a product acceptance problem. Trace high impact odors are found in packaging materials and in many food products including such things as beer, high fructose corn syrup and dairy products. The sophisticated AromaTrax® system is designed to effectively discover offending odor compounds and identify them chemically.
