The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit is calling for medicine packaging to be made more toddler-resistant to prevent poisonings.

The unit estimates that 1,000 toddlers a year are poisoned by medicines.

Emergency paediatrician Dr Ruth Barker says a significant number of the cases are caused by children taking pills from blister packs, and standards need to be developed.

"Kids often find it fun to pop out the medication," she said.

"Blister packs, when child-resistant standards originally came in, were considered to be child-resistant because you have to pop out each individual dose.

"But we know that children are able to access a large number of doses of medicine from blister packs if they're given enough time."

She says keeping medication out of children's reach is the main solution, but the packaging also needs to be harder to open.

"Parents often don't realise the potential danger of the medicine that they have at home until they actually see their child eat it and ring poisons information and end up in the emergency department," she said.

"So I think that those who have experience in this area will be glad when they know there's that extra protection there."
