Security Design
Security designs appear on a lot of documents: from the most obvious example, banknotes, over passports and ID documents to checks, lottery tickets and gift vouchers. Today all documents that carry intrinsic value contain one or more security design features.
A dramatic growth of product counterfeiting has lead to more attention to the packaging of fraud-sensitive goods. Here too, security design is becoming common practice.
It is clear that these markets have different demands, yet they share a common goal: to make life on the counterfeiter difficult through design complexity and authenticity verification features.

Personalization
Production and personalization of identity and travel documents have undergone significant changes.
After manual personalization: gluing-in of a portrait picture, typing or even handwriting of the personal data, came the introduction of "digital/analogue" personalization - using e.g. photographic techniques for the personalization. Over the past ten years, all-digital personalization has become the standard solution now.
Meanwhile, another evolution is taking place in parallel: a tendency to move from decentralized issuance to centralized production and issuance, mostly in conjunction with central population databases. Of course, such centralized issuance puts extreme demands on the production system.

Digital Printing
As digital printing has become a fact in the personalization of ID and travel documents, attention is drawn to their special properties.
The differences with normal documents are the printing methodology (no traditional screening), the special inks (containing security features), the unique substrates, etc.
