Innovia Films’ NatureFlex™ has once again scooped top accolades at the 2009 Packaging Association of Canada (PAC) Awards. The "Sustainable Packaging Leadership Awards" were held on April 22nd 2009 to coincide with Earth Day in Ontario, Canada. The PAC wins come on the heels of two additional sustainable packaging awards for NatureFlex™ from the Flexible Packaging Association in February 2009.
NatureFlex™ was entered in the category of "Raw Materials Sold in Canada – International Products" for which Innovia Films received the Gold "Sustainable Packaging Leadership Award". This is a repeat of the success from last year’s event.
An Innovia Films’ customer from Canada, Key West Gourmet Foods, was also a Gold Award winner at the event. The company is using a lamination of two films, NatureFlex NVS and NatureFlex NE White, for the outer wrap of its line of frozen seafood and vegetarian chowders which will be launched later this year under the brand name e.a.t.® (environmental and tasty). They received the Gold "Sustainable Packaging Leadership Award" in the "Branded Package – Canadian Products" category.
According to Key West Gourmet Foods Founder and President, George Gelakis, “Key West Gourmet Foods began researching sustainable packaging options three years ago. Our goal was to reduce the company’s overall packaging footprint and to use sustainable materials wherever possible.” The ingredients used in e.a.t.® are also sustainably sourced – with the guiding principle that all e.a.t.® products must be sustainable inside and out.
Mr Gelakis is enthusiastic about receiving the award and noted, “We chose NatureFlex™ because it is made from fully sustainable resources and is non-food based. No other product in the market met our criteria of being sustainable cradle to grave.”
NatureFlex™ is produced from renewable wood pulp sourced from managed plantations which either have or are actively working towards Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification. The product is also compostable and certified under ASTM D6400 to compost within six weeks.
Roslyn Smith, Sales & Marketing Manager, Americas stated, “NatureFlex is a truly unique product, and its sustainable characteristics are being leveraged by many progressive companies to gain a competitive edge in today’s environmentally conscious marketplace. We are thrilled to have received the Canadian Packaging Association Gold Award and are equally delighted about the Gold Award received by our valued partner, Key West Gourmet Foods.”
