Since 1999, E²M/Polytron has been using the emulation features of Brooks Automation’s AutoMod Simulation Software to help debug and optimize the PLC controls for integrated high-speed packaging and material handling systems within the food, beverage pharmaceutical, and consumer products industries. We have used emulation to debug and successfully install 22 systems as of May 2003. Due to the significant results we have obtained in shortening the startup/debug times for these systems (typically by 30%) and the enhanced operator training that the emulation allows, it is now our standard practice. We consider it an essential tool for bringing complex projects in on time and on budget. In this paper, we will discuss how E²M/Polytron uses our standardized method of applying emulation called PolySimSM, to better manage the risks inherent in installing or modifying complex packaging and material handling systems.
