Polypropylene Packaging: Polystyrene and Cardboard Packaging, and Packaging Containers for Commercial Air Freight, Transport and Storage

Airpak manufactures and markets polypropylene packaging for commercial air freight and all other forms of transport and storage, in particular the transport of seafood and perishable products of all types.

A vast amount of effort has gone into the research and design of a product that to a large extent should replace the conventional and environmentally unfriendly polystyrene foam and cardboard containers currently in use.

The Airpak Product

The Airpak container designed for the airfreight industry is manufactured from a high density polypropylene combination of copolymers and homopolymers from Grade A virgin material with good thermal properties. The material is extruded into fluted sheets in a variety of colours to suit market applications. Bases and lids of the Airpak are computer cut to size in two separate flat sheets with stamped programmed fold lines. In seconds the two components can be assembled into extremely strong self locking lids and bases which when joined together become the Airpak airfreight containers.

The containers can be custom designed and manufactured in a variety of sizes to suit specific market applications for various products. This can be provided with full screen print. Both products will be price competitive with existing forms of packaging.

Airpak Packaging can offer their clients a tailor made solution to their packaging requirements. Some examples of industries currently using Airflute products throughout Australia include:

Seafood – Airfreight Approved

Airpak Packaging have designed and manufactured a range of flat pack two piece containers that have either been approved by The Seafood Air Transport Committee, or are currently being tested. These range from a payload of 5kg to 100kg+.

Products include Snapperpak, Tunapak, Salmonpak, Atlantic Salmonpak, Lobsterpak, Prawnpak, Scallopak, Freezerpak or your own custom packaging solution.

Horticultural

  • Airflute is the ideal solution for transportation of fruit, vegetables and flowers
  • Airflute can be used for the storage and transportation of all perishables

General Packaging

Airflute is ideal for replacing existing cardboard packaging. The extra strength, lighter weight, water resistance, recyclability and reusability provide many benefits over cardboard.

Signage

Airflute is not restricted to being used as a packaging tool, it is currently used by numerous sign writers for advertising display and real estate signage. As Airflute is corona treated it is suitable for outdoor use.

Tailor Made Solutions

Airpak Packaging can economically design and produce an Airflute packaging solution to suit your needs.  Whether you require one piece or two piece boxes, self locking, water tight or heat welded, we can produce the Airflute packaging you require.

Colours and Branding

Airflute can be produced in 18 different base colours from clear to black. Your branding can then be printed on any or all surfaces in 1, 2, 4 or full colour print.

Additional Products to Suit Cold Chain Management

Airpak Packaging also provide a complete range of HDPE and LDPE liners to complement our packaging range. We also supply one or two sided laminated foil PE bubble or PE foam sheeting to line and insulate air containers.

Intellectual Property

  • Design protection has been registered.
  • Following extensive laboratory tests, The Seafood Air Transport Committee has granted the following approval numbers for air transport;
  • 20KG - 34 and 20KG - 35. These approval numbers allow the use of the Airpak by any International or Australian domestic air carrier.
  • Airpak Airfreight containers have been approved for packing method 13 (without liner) and method 17 (with liner)

The products currently in use within the Airpak target markets are made from either polystyrene foam or cardboard, both of which have inherent disadvantages.

After significant market research the following advantages of the Airpak have been identified when compared to existing products in the marketplace.

Environment

Being manufactured from a polypropylene based material it is 100% recyclable.

Health

Airpak products are manufactured from polypropylene, which is completely non- toxic.

Strength

The product has a much higher resistance to impact-caused fracturing or splitting. This is particularly important in the prevention of leakage within the cargo compartment of a very expensive aircraft. It also assists in preventing the ingress of warmer air which will cause the complete loss of live products as well as rapid deterioration of any perishable item.

Memory

In addition to the strength of the material used, it also has an inbuilt memory which will allow the Airpak to return to its original shape in most cases of impact damage.

Reusability

The material used is both chemically inert as well as being impervious to water and most non-hazardous liquids. With suitable, simple cleaning methods the packages can be used many times over. This is not the case with polystyrene or paper based products particularly due to their absorbent properties.

Transport

A huge saving in transport costs is a major advantage of the Airpak products over its competitors, in particular the preformed polystyrene box. The Airpak in its pre-folded form is completely flat, enabling large numbers to be transported without taking up a great deal of transport space, providing a significant cost saving of up to 92% in some instances. This enables transport assets to be more effectively utilized, and also provides the added advantage of being able to cheaply transport used units for re-use or recycling.

An added benefit of the huge savings in transport costs for the seafood industry is that packing direct off vessels for the end user is practical, as the vehicles servicing the vessels have surplus space for packing material.

Storage

The same advantages as for transport. Large volume storage facilities are not required, which can represent a huge saving in capital cost, with the added advantage of no risk of water or insect damage while stored.

Weight

The per unit weight using our product is significantly less than an equivalent cardboard product.

Storage loss

Due to the non-absorbent properties of this product, the risk of deterioration by moisture whilst in storage, particularly on vessels that pack at sea, is eliminated.
