Most packaging managers see the proliferation of “extended producer responsibility” or EPR mandates around the globe as a very costly compliance issue. The laws in 28 countries of Europe and Asia require companies to weigh their packaging in order to calculate complex fees based on material. Two Canadian provinces are set to follow suit in 2004. Many companies simply ignore the issue at headquarters and leave fee calculation up to various distributors – who may or may not be in compliance with the laws. A few savvy companies have centralized their packaging data, and use software to calculate the fees. However, having this data at their fingertips has better enabled some companies to see where they can reduce their packaging costs significantly with small design changes. This paper provides an overview of the global legislation and some examples of what companies are doing to track and reduce their packaging for global markets.
