An ANSYS computer model of the bottom of a self-pressurized container is developed using static, nonlinear, elasto-plastic analysis with contact elements. Variables in the model include, the yield strength and thickness of the metal, and the radii of the bottom. The model predicts the stresses that develop in the bottom as a function of pressure inside the container. Eight simulations are run with incremental pressure steps, and the yield point pressures and maximum loading pressures, are predicted. As expected, thinner bottoms and large bottom radii produce lower yield and maximum loading pressures. One simulation of a small defect is also presented. This paper has presented an important first step in the theoretical stress modeling of container bottoms based on geometry and material characteristics. The results of this first generation model are in close agreement with experimental results. With further refinement of the theoretical model the goal will shift toward developing safer designs for self-pressurized container bottoms (and tops) as well as evaluating the potential effects of various defects, including those incurred in design, manufacturing, shipping and during consumer use.
