Traditionally, the Sealant and Adhesive Industry’s product response to applications requiring fast grab and green strength is to sell solvated rubber products. As solvent evaporates it leaves behind a sticky, tacky adhesive/sealant that demonstrates fast grab and green strength. These products are subject to high shrinkage, high VOC content, flammability (low flash point) and generally do not provide any chemical bonding for adhesion, but they are inexpensive to manufacture and sell and are adequate for most applications. In addition, many have been subject to environmental regulations like the Montreal Protocol, AQMD’s, CARB, and the Ozone Transport Committee. Fortunately, the industry no longer has to depend on solvated rubber products to obtain fast grab and high green strength. This can be done with one-part moisture reactive adhesives and sealants at very low VOC content, chemical bonds to increase adhesion, much higher flash points resulting in less flammable products, and at the same time meet environmental regulations.
